In health care, keeping skills current protects the public. For medical and nursing staff, mastering CPR and basic life support is a practical condition of clinical work; for support staff and caregivers, it is a requirement of the role. Here is what is expected for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

In Ecuador, the registration and enablement of health professionals are handled through the Health Services Quality Assurance Agency (Agencia de Aseguramiento de la Calidad de los Servicios de Salud, ACESS), under the Ministry of Public Health. There is no established state process for periodic competency certification, and continuing medical education is concentrated mainly in postgraduate courses.

Even so, medical and nursing staff are expected to hold a basic life support (BLS) certification, renewable roughly every two years, driven by the employer or by the institution's accreditation. Keeping CPR current is, in practice, a condition of clinical work.

There is no mandatory nationwide continuing-education hours standard nor an established competency-certification process for these professions in Ecuador; keeping CPR and basic life support current is expected and largely employer- or accreditation-driven, with renewal typically every two years.

For support staff, the auxiliar de enfermería certification — endorsed by SETEC and the MSP — includes mandatory first-aid, CPR and geriatric-care modules. In formal institutions, first-aid and CPR certification is mandatory: the position requires it alongside occupational training, and a recognized standalone certificate meets it and must be renewed.
